The Totality Of Psychological Characteristics And Behavioural Modalities Which, In Their Integration, Form The Irreducible Core Of An Individual Who Is So In The Multiplicity And Diversity Of The Environmental Situations Where He Operates. This Concept Becomes Important In The History Of Psychology Starting From The 30s, When The Terms Temperament And Character Become Obsolete. The Analysis Of Personality Is Done With The Help Of The Idiographic Method, Which Underlines The Difference Between Two Individuals, And As Such Is Different From Typology Which Builds Models By Which Classify Individuals.
1. Somatic-constitutionalist Theories.
They Study Personalities Starting From The Correspondences Between The Physical And Psychological Characteristics Of An Individual. Started By ıppocrates And Galieno, It Is Present Nowadays In The Theories Of E. Kretschmer, W. Sheldon, N. Pende And Others. ıt Can Be Noted Here That An Individual Who Has A Certain Physical Constitution And Behaves Following The Expectations The Environment Has Towards Him Depending On His Characteristics, Receives A Positive Feedback Which Favours His Adjustment With The Environment.
2. Factorial Theories.
The Factorial Theory Has Been Used By B. Cattell And H.j. Eysenck. Cattell Believes That Personality Is What Allows The Prediction Of What An Individual Will Do In A Certain Situation Defined By His Features Which Are The Mental Structures With A Biological Basis. We Have The Surface Features, The Origin Features, Which Are Steadier Than The Former. Such Are The Common Features, As The Features Of Abilities, Temperament, Dynamism, And The Unique Features As The Pathologic Ones. Among The Dynamic Features We Have The Ergs, Innate, And The Metaergs, Acquired. For Eysenck, Personality Is "the Total Sum Of The Behavioural Schemes, Actual And Potential, Hereditary And Acquired. ıt Is Generated Through The Functional Interaction Of The Four Main Sectors: The Cognitive, The Conative, The Affective And The Somatic. H. Sjoebring's Dimensional Theory Refers To The Neuro-physiological Substratum, Of Which It Considers: Width Of Each Nervous Process, Diffusion, Resistance.
3. Holistic Theories.
They Underline The Wholeness Of Personality In Its Biological And Psychological Moment And State That "the Law Of The Whole Governs The Functioning Of The Parts, And So It Is More Useful To Study The Person As A Whole Than To Examine An Isolated Psychological Function In More Subjects" (k. Golstein).
