English Biography
Ahmet Arvasi is an intellectual, an author and a pedagogue. Born in 1932, he and his family are from the village Arvas (Doganyayla), from where they took their last name, in Van province`s Mukus (Bahcesaray) town.
After graduating from the Erzurum teacher training college in 1952, he worked as a teacher for a short while. He then graduated from the Gazi Educational Institute pedagogical studies department in 1958 and worked as a teacher in Balikesir, Bursa and Istanbul before retiring in 1979. That year, he became a member of the administration for the National Movement Party (MHP) fulfilling his duties there until the military coup of September 12 1980. He was also an Istanbul senator candidate for the MHP. During this time, Arvasi wrote articles for a column entitles “The Turk-Islam Ideal“ for Hergun newspaper. After September 12, he was questioned about the MHP and put on trial with Turk-Islam idealist organizations. He was tortured in the Mamak prison. After his release he wrote for the “Turkish newspaper,“ as well as other dailies and magazines.
He died on December 31, 1988 in Erenkoy and was buried in Edirnekapi.
