2 December 1981, Kentwood, Louisiana, USA

Birth Name
Britney Jean Spears

Nickname
Brit
Pinkey
The Princess of Pop

Height
5′ 4″ (1.63 m)

“Pop Phenomenon” doesn’t come close to describing Britney Spears. The name is legend around the world. So famous is Britney Spears now that it’s impossible to imagine a World in which she doesn’t exist.

Born to parents Jamie Spears and Lynne Spears, Britney is their second child of three. Her older brother, Bryan Spears, was born in April 1977 and her younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, was born in April 1991. They later moved to Kentwood, Louisiana. From a young age, Britney was always fixing to be a star with idols such as Madonna, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, the young Britney could always be heard singing, no matter what else was going on around her. After taking extensive dance and vocal lessons and performing in numerous talent shows and fairs, Britney auditioned for “MMC” (1989) TV series [1989-1994] when she 8, however, she was too young to get the part. Instead, Britney, her mother and baby sister moved to New York where she starred in several TV adverts and an off-Broadway play, “Ruthless”, where she was understudy with Natalie Portman. Her love of music and dance took over and, 2 years later, she auditioned for a part on “Mickey Mouse” again and, this time, won the part along with Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake. As a Mouseketeer, Britney received extensive training in dance, drama and singing and had to grow up a lot during that time. However, after the show was canceled two years later, Britney returned home and did “the normal teenager thing”, attending pool parties and she was also the Homecoming Queen. As a young teenager, Britney soon grew restless again and this time was desperate to become a star yet again. Again, she traveled to New York and sent out demo tapes to various labels including Sony and Mercury, but was turned down. It was Jive Records that finally took the young Britney on and set out on making her the star she is today.

She hit the studio with writers/producers, such as Max Martin and Eric Foster White, and the result was her debut album. In late 1998, Jive released her debut single “(Hit me) Baby one more time” which was a pop hit around the Globe, accompanied by the sixteen-year-old first of many controversial acts – the video, which featured Britney dressed in a Catholic schoolgirl uniform, baring her midriff, which was soon to become her trademark. Nonetheless, the single was a smash worldwide and Britney was instantly a household name. She toured with the popular boy band *NSYNC and the single shot to the top of the charts for 3 weeks. Her debut album was released a few months later in early 1999 and, like the single, took to the top of the album charts, where it remained number one for six weeks. The album has now sold millions worldwide and is officially 14 x platinum in the US. Her next controversial act, after the video, was to take the cover of Rolling Stones magazine in a suggestive pose, but as Britney mania took off, the 17-year-old became more and more popular. Appealing to young girls, teenage boys and older men, Britney was on her way, yet nobody could have predicted at that time the impact she would have on Pop Culture. The second single, “Sometimes”, was released in June 1999 followed by the top 10 hit “Crazy” in September and “from the bottom of my broken heart” soon after. Britney ended 1999 selling over 10 million copies of her debut and, as the Billboard Top Female Pop Artist (singles and albums), Top New Pop Artist, Top Billboard 200 album Artist and Top 100 singles Artist – female. The American Awards, MTV and Teen Choice awards soon began rolling in and, in early 2000, Britney was nominated for two Grammy awards.

At just 18, Britney released her second album in 2000, the #1 smash “Oops! I did it again” and single of the same title, which topped the singles chart for 5 weeks. Smash singles “Stronger” and “Lucky” followed but, it was around this time, that Britney was beginning to raise more than a few eyebrows. It seemed some people weren’t too happy with the message she was sending their impressionable young children. On one hand, Britney was the perfect picture of innocence, declaring herself a Virgin until marriage yet, on the other hand, she was sexually charged and provocative, with performance such as the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000, when her costume made her appear scantily-clad. As the young woman was growing up, it seemed there was an internal conflict between her, her management and her mother, all pulling her in different directions. Yet the image the public saw was a gorgeous young woman, beautifully dressed and damn close to perfection, often labeled the “Pop Princess” around the world. Still, the awards kept rolling in and, in early 2001, Britney struck a lucrative deal with Pepsi-Cola for sponsorship and advertising. The 19-year-old was growing up fast, with the media constantly fixed on what she was and wasn’t doing, her “rivalry” with former fellow Mouseketeer Christina Aguilera and also her blossoming relationship with *NSYNC heartthrob Justin Timberlake. Britney was keen that people saw her as a growing woman as she began to ready the public for her next LP release in late 2001.

In November, she hit the top 10 with the sexually charged “I’m a slave 4 u” which took a completely different turn in musical direction from her previous singles and, in the same month, released her third LP, self-titled “Britney”, which shot to the top of the albums charts, breaking records for a female artist. Her performance of “Slave” at the MTV VMA’s caused outrage among animal rights campaigners, as she performed with a live giant snake and wearing little herself. It was a far cry from the Britney of just three years ago, and perhaps the critical moment when what some people would say “she started going downhill”. Sales of her third album, while impressive, where not nearly as high as her former releases, perhaps due to the increase of new pop female singers flooding the market, yet Britney, still incredibly popular, carried on. In early 2002, the 20-year-old Britney released “I’m not a girl, not yet a woman”, taken from the soundtrack of her debut movie Crossroads (2002/I), which was released in February of that year. She soon after hit the charts with “Overprotected” and also toured worldwide on the “Dream within a dream tour”. Yet, it seemed it was all getting too much for Britney, her four year relationship with Timberlake ended suddenly and very publicly and she soon announced she was to take 6 months off, after all, she had achieved so much by such a young age and in such a short space of time. Her star was by no means fading, with “Forbes” declaring her “The World’s most powerful celebrity” in mid-2002.

While she may have been on a break from her career, she was by no means breaking from the media, who followed her relentlessly, even more keen to track her down and find out what she was up to. Britney was increasingly letting her pop princess crown slip, admitting she had lost her sacred virginity to Timberlake, outside of marriage. Britney could also be seen smoking and drinking to excess on wild nights out and famously breaking down in tears while being interviewed by Diane Sawyer about her parents (who were recently divorced) and her bitter split from Timberlake. Britney was linked to men such as Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit and openly kissed Colin Farrell at a movie premiere. However, she seemed to get herself back together for her new album released in late 2003. In a blitz of publicity which included the infamous “Like a Virgin” performance and Madonna kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards in August that year. The new album, “In The Zone”, was a bid to be seen as a woman and caused controversy with songs on it such as “Breathe on Me” and “Touch of my hand” – which was about masturbation – however, the appeal of Britney was still there and the album topped the Billboard 200 albums charts. The first single to be lifted was “Me against the music” a club hit that featured pop icon Madonna and singing with her was a dream come true for Britney. Now 22, it seemed Britney was in a lot more control over her career, yet her personal life still seemed to be slipping. In January 2004, Britney got “married” to childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander in a Las Vegas ceremony. The incident shocked the world, especially when the marriage was annulled 55 hours later and was described as “a joke taken too far” by her management.

Britney soon released one of her biggest singles, “Toxic”, which topped various charts around the world including the UK and Canadian singles charts. The single was a smash-hit and silenced any critics that said Britney no longer had what it took to make a comeback. She soon began her highly publicized and overtly sexual “Onyx Hotel Tour”, which was canceled a few months later after Britney damaged her knee during a video shoot and had to receive medical treatment. Other singles off the album included the gold-selling “Everytime”, which topped the UK singles charts and, like usual, also carried a fair amount of controversy for its video, which allegedly depicted the star committing suicide after a fight with her boyfriend, played by Stephen Dorff; however, this was “changed” to an accident in which she drowns yet reincarnates. It was around this time that Britney began dating Kevin Federline, a former backup dancer who she had taken on tour with her a few months previously. The snag here was that Kevin came with baggage – in the form of an “ex” girlfriend, heavily pregnant “Moesha” (1996) actress Shar Jackson and their young child. Britney and Kevin soon became engaged and, in September 2004, were married in a secret ceremony, soon after the birth of Kevin’s second child. That same month, Britney released a single off her upcoming “Greatest Hits” album (released in November 2004) a cover of Bobby Brown’s 1988 hit “My Prerogative”.

Britney was a changed woman, no longer concerned with what the public thought of her or her appearance, she parted ways with her manager who she had had since she was 13, and was increasingly stepping out looking more “trailer trash” than multi-millionaire. In February 2005, Britney won her first Grammy for the single “Toxic” as Best Dance Recording. Just two months later, it was announced Britney was pregnant with her first child. A reality TV Series “Britney & Kevin: Chaotic” (2005), which featured the pair getting to know each other the previous year, leading up to their wedding aired on UPN and eventually got a world-wide audience, despite harsh criticism. In September 2005, Britney evolved yet again, this time as a devoted wife and mother, with the birth of her first child, a son, who she named Sean Preston. In November of that year, she released a remix album “B in the mix, the Remixes”.

Looking back over the last seven years of this remarkable lady’s career and life, it really is hard to imagine what the face of Pop would look like without her. Here is a 24 year-old woman who has grown in the face of the glaring media from innocent School-girl to sexual pop vixen to young wife and mother. Who knows what is next for Britney? Rumours of a comeback album for 2006 have been circulating for a while and also a few more movie productions, yet one thing is for certain: Britney Spears has worked hard to get to where she is today and by no means will she be disappearing any time soon. Her name and face is legend in the media and celebrity circuit and it’s surely only a matter of time before Spears shocks us all again, with her next album or tour or movie or personal move. One thing is for certain, though, the public will be watching

HANDE YENER

Hande Yener (born January 12, 1973 in Istanbul, Turkey) is a Turkish pop singer. Over the past decade, she has introduced different styles to the ever expanding Turkish pop music scenery. Each one of her albums has generated a lot of interest as well as anticipation due to the different styles, genres and rhythms that she incorporates into her music. Besides the different experiments Hande tackles with music, her looks and image are also going through a constant change which blends with the sort of music she releases at the time. Hande was nominated for Best Turkish Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008, only to be beaten by Emre Aydın. She has sold close to 17 million albums all over the world.

Musical career

[edit]Sezen Aksu’s invitation
In 1992, Hande Yener met Hülya Avşar, who was shopping at the department store she worked at. Hülya Avşar would arrange for a meeting with her to meet Sezen Aksu, who would eventually invite her to audition in order to work with her on her upcoming album. Hande went on to be hired and quickly become Sezen Aksu’s assistant and back vocalist for her album, “Deli Kızın Türküsü” (Folk Songs of a Crazy Girl). This gave her the first stepping stone into the music industry, as working with Aksu allowed her not only to gain some experience as an artist, but also play contributions to producing some of Sezen’s famous albums during the 1990s.
[edit]Career beginnings: Senden İbaret and Extra
Hande would go on to work with Sezen as a back vocalist for two years. Afterwards Hande managed to establish herself not only some experience, but also a recognizable name as those that work as vocalist for Sezen tend to attract some attention for being chosen as worthy artists. It took some time for Hande to finally release her first album in 1999 which called, “Senden İbaret” (All About You).

The first single released off from the album was called, “Yalanın Batsın” (Damn Your Lies). It was a dance track that spelled instant success. This was considering that it managed to skyrocket right to the top of most Turkish charts, allowing it to become an instant club hit. The second single that followed from this album was, “Yoksa Mani” (If There Isn’t An Obstacle). It too managed to attract a lot attention, as it was a pop track that accompanied some eastern-sounding elements to it.
The success behind “Senden İbaret” was so successful, that it prompted a single release called, “Extra” in 2001. This CD single featured different remixes to songs that appeared on her first album, along with a couple of new tracks as well. It managed to do surprisingly well for a single, as Hande’s popularity had just begun to pick up steam.
[edit]Prominent success with Sen Yoluna… Ben Yoluma…
Later in 2001, Hande’s second album came out and just when she may have thought that she’s seen it all, her success managed to further skyrocket with “Sen Yoluna… Ben Yoluma…” (Go Your Way…I Will Go Mine…). The album incorporated a lot of ethnic and traditional music with those of modern pop. With singles like, “Sen Yoluna… Ben Yoluma…” and “Küs”; Hande’s popularity seemed to show no end. Her success can be witnessed as she performed at sold-out concerts not only in Turkey but also abroad. That, plus she has been recognized as being one of most likely artist to continue on a successful musical career for years to come. Indeed, this would prove to be the case in the release of the albums to follow.

3rd album: Aşk Kadın Ruhundan Anlamıyor
Later on, Hande would return back into the music industry with the release of, “Aşk Kadın Ruhundan Anlamıyor” (Love Doesn’t Understand a Women’s Soul) in 2004. Her third album, which had six hits all over Turkey included, “Acele Etme” (Don’t Rush), “Kırmızı” (Red), “Acı Veriyor” (The Pain it Gives), “Armağan” (Gift), “Hoşgeldiniz” (Welcome) and “Bu Yüzden” (Because of That). Other tracks that became radio hits across Turkey included, “Savaş Sonrası” (After the War) and “Aşk Kadın Ruhundan Anlamıyor”. “Aşk Kadın Ruhundan Anlamıyor” brought success to Hande in some countries outside of Turkey as well. Hande’s 3rd album is arguable one of her best as it featured ranging genres stretching from “Acı Veriyor”‘s rock ballad to “Acele Etme”‘s Oriental dance beats. Nonetheless, this album’s popularity presisted for over 2 years.
[edit]Musical change: Apayrı and Hande Maxi
Although her previous album was a huge success, Hande decided to improve and refine her music style once more. She would leave the Türk pop, paving the way to incorporate a more dance-friendly Euro Pop sound, along with changing her appearance as well. She cut and dyed her black from blonde. The result was “Apayrı” (Totally Different), which came out in early 2006. Some of the hit singles that came out from “Apayrı”" included, “Kelepçe” (Handcuffs), “Aşkın Ateşi” (The Fire of Love) and “Kim Bilebilir Aşkı” (Who Can Guess What Love Is). Each of these singles featured different genres that simply wowed Turkey. “Kelepçe” had a groovy disco sound to it. “Aşkın Ateşi” was a sweet pop track and “Kim Bilebilir Aşkı” featured a Far-Eastern sound that had hints of techno felt throughout the song. It was claimed that this album sold 150,000 copies within 5 days. Other sources state that Apayrı sold 165.000 altogether in 2006.
Later on, as the popularity of “Apayrı” spread all around Turkey, Hande decided to release a maxi-single containing songs composed with her new musical style (which would be also her first maxi-single released). The result was “Hande Maxi”, which also gained popularity. “Hande Maxi” contained three new songs as well three remixes. The three new songs had a more electronic and trance sound in them, hinting another change in her musical style. One of the new songs, “Biraz Özgürlük” (A Little Freedom), has gained popularity.

Embracing electropop: Nasıl Delirdim?, Hipnoz and Hayrola?
After Hande Maxi, with its electronic and trance sound, Hande continued with that sound releasing “Nasıl Delirdim?” (How Did I Go Mad?) on the 15th May, 2007. The album included numerous tracks written and composed by Sezen Aksu. The first single featured was called, “Kibir” (Arrogance). The album was released with 72,000 copies and four different covers which included 3-dimensional artworks. The copies released later fashioned only one of these four covers. The themes on the album were mostly about a woman’s worries about relationships dealing with about paranoia, letting go, being sad or mad and selfishness. The second single was almost obvious when the first single came out. It was called, “Romeo”; a song co-written by Hande herself, dedicated to her boyfriend. “Yalan Olmasın” (Without a Lie) was released in January 2008 as a third, and final, single with accompanying music video. It did not achieve much succes, however, for it did not chart at all in Turkey.
In April 2008, it was announced that Hande has finished working on her new studio album. The album, “Hipnoz” (Hypnosis), was released in July 2008, and is, like Nasıl Delirdim?, from beginning to end full of electronic sounds. The album didn’t sell as well as her previous albums, having sold 40.000+ copies. The title track served as the lead song, as well as being the only single coming from that album. Like the album, Hipnoz didn’t do well, reaching the #10 position in the Turkish chart, according to Nielsen Music Control.
However, not tired of electropop yet, Hande released Hayrola? (What’s Going On?), being released on the 6th of April, 2009. The album contains, yet again, 10 tracks, all in the style of electropop. It was her first, and as it turned out only, album on the “Avrupa” label. For “Hayrola?”, which is recorded in the UK, Hande has worked with electronic composer Erol Temizel, and 9 of the songs have lyrics written by Hande Yener herself (with “Siz” being the exception, for that song is written by Aylin Aslım). The main themes of the album are women breaking down taboos and traditional values, the inability to embrace different lifestyles and the complex mechanisms of attraction. The album almost equaled the sales of Hipnoz, having sold 37,000+ copies. The lead single, as well as the only single released from this album, title track Hayrola? did better than her two previous singles, reaching #3 on the Turkish music chart.

Return to pop music: Hande’ye Neler Oluyor?
On the first of April, 2010, being blonde again and having left Avrupa Müzik, now being part of the music label of Poll Production, Hande released yet another album, called Hande’ye Neler Oluyor? (What’s Going On With Hande?). Before she released this album, she has been cited that she would likely return to a more pop-oriented sound, meaning letting go of the prevailing electronic sound of her last three albums and her EP Hande Maxi. Although not a collection of pure electronic songs, the album didn’t throw the electronic sound completely overboard — it actually contains no live instrumentation — favouring a more dance-pop oriented album, reminiscing of some songs of her Apayrı-era, over the more Türk pop albums in the early days of her career.
The album contains 11 songs and 3 remixes, making a total of 14 songs, all of which are written completely by Sinan Akçıl, a Turkish composer, songwriter and music producer perhaps best known for Hadise’s ESC 2009 song Düm Tek Tek. The album has sold more than 50.000 copies in the first week of its release,[1] and went on selling 60,000+ in its third and fourth week.
Hande’yle Yaz Bitmez
Hande’yle Yaz Bitmez is the third maxi single by Turkish pop artist Hande Yener, released by Poll Production[3] The CD consists of one new song, “Uzaylı” (Alien), being her new single, two remixes of that same song, and eight remixes of songs from her previous album “Hande’ye Neler Oluyor?”, all written by Sinan Akçıl.[4][5]
2011: Teşekkürler
Her latest album is called Teşekkürler (Thank you). Hande worked together with Sinan Akçıl. The album consists of 12 songs. The first single of the new album is called Bana Anlat.
Collaboration with other artists

In September 2007, the single of, “Aşk Beni Hep Değiştirecek” (Love Will Always Change Me) was released by Harun Kolçak. The song gave Harun a noticeable breakthrough, as it was written by Hande and composed by Erol Temizel, who is also responsible for compsing several of Hande’s tracks in her, “Nasıl Delirdim” album.
In January 2008, Hande was featured in a single she wrote called, “Bir Yerde” (Somewhere) which was mainly sung by Kemal Doğulu. This collaboration, along with the composition work of Erol Temizel helped raise attention to Kemal’s debut into the Turkish music industry. Kemal, also happens to be the brother of Kadir Doğulu, Hande Yener’s ex-fiance. Kemal and Hande have a history together, as he’s responsible for directing the video clip of Hande’s “Romeo”.
Eurovision offer

Hande Yener, officially announced she has been approached by TRT, the Turkish state-owned TV channel, two days after the Eurovision finals took place in 2007, in Helsinki, Finland. She had initially stated they will finalize the contract in 15 days, and she is going to Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Serbia with an English song.[6]
Following these confirmations, Hande Yener’s representatives would go in to talks with TRT in order to officialize her possible participation in next year’s contest. It was then later proclaimed by Hande herself that the talks have failed to go anywhere and that a Eurovision participation was ruled out for 2008.[7]
Current projects

Hande Yener confirmed that she is going to the United Kingdom to make a new English Album, from the record label EMI.
