DEATH PENALTY

Death penalty is the legal killing of a person who commited a serious crime. It has been applied in many different settings from the oldest civizilitations to today’s society. It always causes arguments. Some people support it whereas some people do not. It is a very serious and difficult subject and people have many ideas about this, so arguments
do not end. Although there are many arguments about it, it should continue to be used. It is the best punishment for serious crimes.

In the past, death penalty was used by most of the countries whereas today, only a few countries use it. These countries are, USA, Republic of Soudia Arabia, Iran etc… Death penalty is applied by these countries when a person commits serious crime. These crimes are; adultery, treason, selling and buying drugs etc… Although rules were very strict in the past, death penalty was applied for the same crimes.

Death penalty has not been changed but methods have been changed. For example, in the past, the methods were; strangling, tortune, cutting hands etc… That is, in the past executions methods were cruel. However, today, due to modern technology and respecting human rights, they applied it with electronic chair, poisonous injection or firing squad.

As mentioned before, it is a very serious and difficult subject. There is the danger punishing innocent people. In the past there were many examples. For instance, in America, government hanged a person who was an innocent people. Everybody can make mistakes but it should not cost their lives.

On the other hand, there are many logical reasons for death penalty. The major reason is that, death penalty prevent crimes. For example, there is the deterrence theory which states that potential murderers would think twice. If they want to commit a crime the existence of the death penalty can prevent this.

The other reason is that, death penalty is good for terrorist because they are murderers and tyrants so they deserve being killed. Some people say that, death penalty is against human rights. There are many soldiers and innocent people who were killed by terrorists. It is difficult to understand this discrimination. If people look at soldier’s mothers and their children, people can understand the double standard.

Another reason is that, death penalty is an economical then staying in prison. It changes from country to country but in most countries it is economical. For example, in Turkey, one guilty costs the state 5 million TL a day. There are many guilty in prisons so people can see it is very expensive.

In conclusion, people always argue about death penalty. If people want to maintain society life, death penalty must be applied. It can be against human rights for somebody but maintaining society life is more important then somebody’s thought. Therefore, death penalty should continue to be used.
