Evolution and the Biosphere
The dayâs lecture has been organised by the intructer who said that we should understand how primary supporting argument for the thesis should be built. Instructer explained that students must break it into individual premises and conclusion. Premises must be strictly connected and after this we may built a conclusion. The example which is given by instructer is about Tommaso Campanellaâs work.
In chapter 1, the second paragraph is a good example for this subject. In this paragraph we worked on premises and conclusion.
Nothing comes from nothing.
Animals have sence and feeling. These are the premises.
Sence and feeling comes from nothing.
Sence and feeling are combined by elements. This is the conclusion.
As tou can see from this example premises are so connected and this situation builts us a conclusion.
After this example firstly we started to talk about James E. Lovelockâs Gaia Hypothesis. In Gaia Hypothesis life on earth is the cause of atmosphere.Secondly, lecturer wanted us to read the first two paragraphs of the section entitled Earthâs Atmosphere: Evidence of Life (297-98). The main thesis of these paragraphsâs is high percentage of Nitrogen shows us that there is life. After finding the main thesis we focused on the primary supporting argument for this thesis.
If there is life it produces N2
Earth has high N2 Mars has no N2
Conclusion:1) life exists on earth
Conclusion:2) life does not exists on earth
After all we talked about evidence which is proved in support of the thesis. If it is only about chemical law only NO3 will be sees but in the world we also see N2 which is the evidence of life.
At the end of the lecture we have talked about the meaning of life for Lovelock. Lecturer has gave the specific sentence and students tried to explain this sentence. The lecture was ended by the conversations on this example.
